Symbols of
Defeat – Causes
of Victory
A virgin, wood,
and death were
the symbols of
our defeat.
For, Eve was a
virgin; she had
not yet known
her husband when
she was
deceived. The
wood was the
tree; death was
the chastisement
imposed on
Adam. Do you
see how a
virgin, a tree,
and death were
the symbols of
our defeat?
See, then, how
they also
became, in turn,
causes of our
victory.
Instead of Eve,
Mary; instead of
the tree of the
knowledge of
good and evil,
the Tree of the
Cross; instead
of Adam’s death,
the Master’s
death. Do you
see how the
Devil was
defeated through
the same means
through which he
conquered us?
Through the Tree
the Devil laid
Adam low;
through the
Cross Christ
vanquished the
Devil. The
former tree sent
mankind to
Hades, whereas
the latter Tree,
the Tree of the
Cross, recalled
the departed
from Hades. The
former tree
concealed
defeated Adam as
one captive and
naked, whereas
the latter Tree
revealed to all
the Victor
nailed naked to
it on high. The
former death
condemned all
who came after
it, but the
latter death
truly raised up
those who came
before it. “Who
shall tell of
the mighty acts
of the Lord?
Who shall make
all his praises
to be heard?”
(Psalm 105:2).
From being dead
we have become
immortal, from a
fall we have
been raised up,
and from being
defeated we have
become victors.
These are the
achievements of
the Cross, and
they constitute
the greatest
proof of the
Resurrection.

Paschal Posture
is observed
until after the
Divine Liturgy
on Pentecost
Sunday.
This practice is observed on all days during this period and
applies to our
private prayer
as well. As
observed on all
Sundays and at
each Divine
Liturgy
throughout the
year, this
Byzantine
tradition
reminds us that
through the
Resurrection of
Christ we have
been freed from
slavery to sin
and have been
raised up as
children of God.
There’s still time for any parishioners to respond for attendance at our Anniversary
Jubilee
Celebration if
they have not
yet done so!
Plan on making
an evening
devoted to this
parish
celebration on
Thursday, 24
April. The
Divine Liturgy
begins at 5 pm
and you should
plan on the
banquet ending
at about 9 pm.
Parishioners who
are not able to
drive at night
are to contact
Father Robert so
that rides may
be worked out
for you. All
parishioners
should submit
their responses
to the parish
office or Bob or
Janet Greenwell
(619-644-3600)
as soon as
possible. Ask
Father Robert if
you need another
response card.
We have some
extras. Janet
and Bob
appreciate all
those who have
been timely in
their response.
The banquet is
really shaping
up into a grand
event! We all
need to be
present.
Divine Liturgy, according to a new parish norm, is not being scheduled earlier than 9
am. (Also
note that
hall hours
are now from
10 am to 2
pm on the
regular
days.) It
is hoped
that these
time changes
will
increase
participation
in the
weekday life
of the
parish,
especially
on all
Simple,
Solemn, and
Obligatory
Feasts of
the year.
Folks with
flexible
schedules
should make
a very
strong
effort to
sanctify
these days
by attending
the liturgy
of the
Church here
at Holy
Angels.
Adults with
adjustable
work
schedules
and parents
of children
who are
home-schooled
or in
charter
schools
should be
sure to make
the weekday
life of the
Church a
part of
family life
as much as
possible.
Commemorative Shirts for our Golden Jubilee
are being
produced to
celebrate
this great
year in the
history of
our parish.
Please give
thought to
purchasing
one or more
commemorative
“polo”
shirts by
filling out
a form and
turning it
in with
payment (to
“Holy Angels
Church”) to
Mike or
Linda Rusnak
who are
coordinating
this project
and who can
answer any
questions.
Forms are
available in
the church
narthex.
Shirts are
in white and
burgundy.
All orders
must be
turned in by
next
Sunday, 6
April.
Thank you!
San Diego’s abandoned and neglected children need you! Volunteers visit and lend support to the
children,
interview all
parties
involved, and
make
recommendations
to the court.
Information
sessions will be
held on
Wednesday 2
April, 16 April,
and 7 May. Call
“Voices for
Children” at
